Japanese Kogo - Ceramic Gourd-shaped Incense Container

This white ceramic Japanese kogo (incense container) is made in the shape of gourd.

In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kogo are used to hold wood chip incense during the furo (brazier - summer/spring) season while ceramic kogo are used to hold neriko (kneaded incense) during the ro (hearth - autumn/winter) season.

Kyo-yaki (京焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Kyoto, Japan. The pottery traditions of Kyoto date back to the 5th century and are varied in their styles.
