This exquisitely crafted hira-gata Tokoname-yaki kyusu (teapot) has a flat shape fired in the yakishime (焼締/焼〆) style using a unique clay blend. Hokujō was one of the first in Tokoname to use yakishime style clays. Atop this rustic clay, the kyusu is decorated with an intricate web of fine mogake (藻掛 - seaweed wrapping) patterns. As the name suggests, this traditional Tokoname technique that dates back to the Edo period is achieved by wrapping each piece with amamo seaweed before firing. In the kiln, the seaweed burns off, leaving its carbonised silhouette draped across pot. The teapot's built-in ceramic debeso filter is perfect for naturally straining tea.

This piece was made by Shimizu Genji (清水源二) who makes pottery under the name Hokujō (北条). Born in 1945, Hokujō is one of Tokoname's most experienced potters who continues to hone his craft, producing some of the most refined kyusu. In 1994 , he was certified as a Master of Traditional Craftsman and in 2013 he was named a Tokoname City Human Cultural Asset.

The pot comes in its original kiribako (桐箱 - paulownia wood box) signed and sealed by the artist.
