Wavy Red-Orange Kiyomizu-yaki Chawan

This Kiyomizu-yaki chawan (matcha bowl) has a straight-walled shape and is decorated in a unique style called nejiri-sogimon (捻そぎ紋), putting a literal 'twist' on the classic sogi style. Sogi, also called sogime or sogimon is a traditional ceramic decoration style of vertical fluting. On this chawan, the fluting design has been twisted to give a more organic, wavy impression. Atop a base glaze of textured matte black, this bowl sports patches of a fiery red-orange.

This chawan was made by Igura Toshiya (井栗敏也) of Toshiya Kiln (敏也窯). Born in 1962, Igura-san opened his own kiln in 1984 and has since been known for his unique spins on classic styles.
