Celadon Lotus Petal Chawan

This elegant celadon chawan (matcha bowl) is modeled after the famous Longquan wares from Song Dynasty China, decorated with hand-carved, traditional lotus petal (蓮弁 - renben) motif that symbolises longevity and purity. In a lovely attention to detail, Sugita-san has added fine comb marks to each petal.

The soft blue-green-grey of this celadon is achieved with small amounts of iron in the glaze, which turns blue-green when fired in reduction. While most Lonqquan lotus petal bowls did not have a flaring lip, the few that did were pinnacles of karamono elegance, and so we chose to adopt this shape when designing these chawan.
